Hell’s Gate Reserve Highlights
Located in the southern part of Kenya just northwest of Nairobi. The national park encompasses an area of 26.35 square miles (68.25 sq km). Hell’s Gate borders up to the sister Lake Nakuru National Park. The park is only 56 miles (90 km) from Nairobi sitting at an elevation of 6,200 feet (1,900 m) above sea level. Hell’s Gate Gorge is the main attraction and basis for the park’s name. Red walled cliffs travel along the gorge and feature two volcanic rock formations known as Fischer’s Tower and Central Tower.
Classified by KWS under Scenic Parks (Category B) alongside Mount Longonot and Mount Elgon, Hell’s Gate is priced and managed as an adventure destination. It sits within one of the world’s most active geothermal zones, hosting five Olkaria geothermal power stations. The industrial presence is concentrated in the western section. The gorge, cycling routes, and main wildlife areas remain largely unaffected.

| By Air | You can take a short flight from Nairobi’s Wilson Airport to Naivasha Airport or Loldia Airstrip, followed by a roughly 17-mile road transfer to the park. |

| Cycling Fee | Bicycle entry is ~KES 215 if you bring your own, or you can rent bikes near the gates for about KES 500–800 per day. If you plan to cycle, there is a separate daily fee of KES 300 for citizens/residents or USD 10 for non-residents. |

What You get from Private Conservancies: Off-road game drives, night drives, and guided walking safaris — none of which are permitted inside the main National Reserve. Wildlife density in the conservancies, particularly for big cats, rivals anything in the main reserve with a fraction of the vehicle traffic.
Popular Seasons
The absolute best time to visit Hell’s Gate National Park is during the dry season from June to October and the short dry window in January and February. During these months, the weather is cool, sunny, and dry, making it ideal for cycling, hiking the Ol Njorowa Gorge, and rock climbing Fischer’s Tower without the risk of slippery trails or flash floods.
This is widely considered the optimal window. The grass is short, forcing wildlife (like zebras, giraffes, and buffaloes) out into the open to gather around water sources. Dry days ensure safe gorge hikes and clear photography conditions.
A fantastic, less-crowded alternative. The weather is hot and dry, providing clear skies that are excellent for bird watching and snapping photos of the Rift Valley.
While the landscape becomes lush and the park is great for bird watching, heavy rains can make roads muddy and the Ol Njorowa Gorge highly susceptible to flash floods. Gorge access is sometimes restricted during these times.

Hell’s Gate National Park does not have permanent lodges or hotels inside its boundaries. Visitors stay at wilderness campsites inside the park or at top-rated, nearby lodges and camps around Lake Naivasha, located just 20 to 40 minutes from the Elsa and Olkaria Gates.
