6-Day Samburu, Naivasha & Maasai Mara Safari
You'll depart to Samburu National Reserve. Due to its remote nature, Samburu has become the preferred game reserve for tourists looking for a quieter safari with fewer game vehicles. However, it receives the second-highest number of visitors after the Masai Mara.

    ...

🌅 1. Early Morning Nairobi Departure Your safari begins with a 06:00 AM pickup from your Nairobi hotel or Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NJKIA). Your driver-guide will pack your luggage into a 4x4 Safari Land Cruiser, and you will head north before the morning rush-hour traffic slows the city down.

    ...

🏔️ 2. The Central Highlands & Mount Kenya Drive Drive through the historic lands of the Kikuyu community, passing bustling agricultural towns like Nyeri and Karatina. On a clear morning, you will enjoy spectacular, panoramic views of the jagged, snow-capped peaks of Mount Kenya directly out of your right window. You will cross the geographic Equator line near the town of Nanyuki, where your guide will make a quick stop for a restroom break and a photo opportunity.

    ...

🏜️ 3. Descent Into the Northern Frontier After a quick fuel stop in the frontier town of Isiolo, the landscape changes instantly. The lush farmlands give way to dramatic, flat, semi-arid plains broken up by spectacular volcanic inselbergs (isolated rocky hills) like Mount Ololokwe.

    ...

🍽️ 4. Check-In & Lunch at Your Samburu Lodge Arrive at the gates of Samburu National Reserve by midday. You will drive through the park to your chosen luxury camp or lodge (such as Samburu Simba Lodge or Ashnil Samburu Camp) located along the banks of the river. Check into your room, freshen up, and sit down for a fresh buffet lunch. Take a couple of hours to relax and watch elephants gather on the muddy riverbanks.

    ...

🐆 5. Late Afternoon Game Drive along Ewaso Nyiro At 04:00 PM, head out for your first official game drive. You will drive along the tracking paths of the Ewaso Nyiro River—the lifeblood of this dry ecosystem. Keep your eyes peeled for leopards resting in the massive doum palm trees, desert lions, and your very first sightings of Samburu's rare, climate-adapted wildlife.

    ...

🌌 6. Dinner & Riverside Relaxation Return to your lodge by sunset (06:30 PM) before the park gates close. After a warm shower, enjoy a multi-course dinner in the open-air dining room. Spend your evening relaxing by the campfire, listening to the unique night calls of the northern Kenyan wilderness.

Predators like lions, leopards, and cheetahs are highly active at this hour, walking along the cooler dirt tracks before the desert heat hits.

    ...

🦒 2. Tracking the "Samburu Special Five" Dedicate the mid-morning hours to ticking off the rare, dry-country species found north of the equator that you cannot spot in the Maasai Mara:
    1. Reticulated Giraffe: Striking, clean, brick-red geometric patterns.
    2. Grevy's Zebra: Much larger than common zebras, featuring thin, narrow stripes and large rounded ears.
    3. Somali Ostrich: Males display distinctive bright blue necks and legs instead of pink.
    4. Beisa Oryx: Elegant, spear-horned antelope with striking black-and-white face masks.
    5. Gerenuk: The famous "giraffe-gazelle" that stands vertically on its hind legs to eat leaves from high branches.

    ...

🍽️ 3. Midday Rest & Riverside Lunch Return to the lodge around 11:30 AM as the equatorial sun heats the plains. Animals retreat into the thick brush to sleep, making wildlife viewing difficult. Enjoy a relaxed lunch at your lodge and spend the early afternoon reading, sleeping, or watching elephants wallow in the river directly from the camp's viewing deck.

    ...

🐆 4. Afternoon Safari & Leopard Hotspots Head back out at 04:00 PM. Your guide will focus on the dense riverine forest tracking paths. Samburu is famous for its exceptionally high density of leopards. Look closely at the horizontal branches of the massive acacia and doum palm trees where these cats love to drag their kills to keep them away from hyenas.

    ...

🌌 5. Sunset & Traditional Bush Dinner Return to camp by 06:30 PM. Swap stories around the campfire. Many camps arrange a traditional evening dance presentation by local Samburu warriors, who share insights into their nomadic culture, attire, and ancient traditions, followed by dinner under the stars.

🌊 2. Panoramic Stop at Thomson's Falls Around 11:30 AM, your driver will turn west toward Nyahururu, one of Kenya's highest-altitude towns. Here, you will stop to visit Thomson's Falls, a spectacular 74-meter scenic waterfall on the Ewaso Narok River. Take a 20-minute break to stretch your legs, take photos from the misty viewpoint, and use the restrooms.

    ...

🌋 3. Descent into the Great Rift Valley Floor As you drive south from Nyahururu, you will hit the edge of the Great Rift Valley escarpment. The views here are immense. The road snakes down the cliffside, offering sweeping vistas of the valley floor below. You will reach the bustling lakeside town of Naivasha just in time for a late lunch at your resort.

    ...

🦛 4. Afternoon Boat Safari on Lake Naivasha At 03:30 PM, head down to the resort’s jetty for a relaxing 1-hour boat safari on this freshwater lake. Skimming across the water, you will cruise past massive pods of wallowing hippos showing their teeth. ...

Before leaving Naivasha, you will take a short boat ride over to the Crescent Island Game Sanctuary, a private peninsula in the lake. Because there are no large predators (no lions or leopards) on the island, you can safely do a walking safari right alongside herds of giraffes, zebras, waterbucks, and wildebeests. It is a thrilling, up-close wildlife experience.

    ...

🚐 2. The Journey West Across Maasailand By 09:30 AM, board your 4x4 Land Cruiser and hit the road toward the Maasai Mara. You will drive down the smooth tarmac highway to Narok Town, where your guide will make a pitstop for fuel, clean restrooms, and a chance to stretch your legs. Beyond Narok, the smooth road ends and transitions into a bumpy, unpaved dirt track leading to the park gates.

    ...

🔴 3. Arrival in the Maasai Mara & Camp Check-In Arrive at your chosen safari camp or luxury lodge (such as Ashnil Mara Camp, Mara Simba Lodge, or Basecamp Maasai Mara) around 01:30 PM. Check into your canvas tent or room and sit down for a fresh lunch. Take an hour to unpack, relax, and listen to the birds chirping in the surrounding acacia trees.

    ...

🦁 4. Late Afternoon Predator Game Drive At 04:00 PM, head out for your first official game drive in the world's most famous wildlife reserve. The Maasai Mara has the highest concentration of big cats in East Africa. Your guide will track large prides of Mara lions resting in the grass, cheetahs scanning the plains from atop termite mounds, and vast herds of grazing elephants.

    ..

🌌 5. Sunset Over the Savannah & Campfire Dinner As the sun dips below the horizon—painting the sky in deep shades of purple and orange—your driver will steer the vehicle back to camp before the 06:30 PM park closure. Wash off the safari dust with a hot shower, grab a refreshing drink, and gather around the roaring campfire to trade stories before a multi-course buffet dinner.

🌅 1. Dawn Departure & Sunrise Tracking (06:00 AM) Wake up to a crisp morning breeze and grab a quick coffee. Head out at dawn when the savannah is alive with activity. Hyenas are wrapping up their night scavenges, and lion prides are often seen walking along the car tracks using the vehicle's shadow to stalk grazing herds of zebras and topis.

    ...

🦏 2. Hunting for the Big Five across the Plains Spend the entire morning exploring different sectors of the reserve. Your expert guide will use their sharp vision and local radio network to track down the classic Big Five:
    • Lions: Sleeping in massive family prides on the rocky kopjes.
    • Leopards: Camouflaged in the branches of sausage trees along the rivers.
    • Elephants: Family herds grazing through the marshlands.
    • Cape Buffalos: Large, grumpy bachelor herds wallowing in the mud.
    • Black Rhinos: Highly rare and elusive, hidden deep in the thickets of the Mara triangle.

    ...

🌳 3. The Hippo Pools & A Picnic Bush Lunch Drive down to the historic Mara River. Accompanied by an armed park ranger, you will take a short walk along the riverbanks to see massive pods of hundreds of hippos fighting for space, alongside giant Nile crocodiles basking in the sun. Afterward, your guide will find a safe, solitary acacia tree out on the open plains to set up a memorable picnic bush lunch directly on the savannah.

    ...

🐆 4. Afternoon Cheetah Sprint Scouting After lunch, explore the wide, flat grasslands favored by cheetahs. Because they rely on pure speed to hunt, they prefer open terrain. Look closely at the tops of termite mounds and fallen logs—cheetahs use these elevated vantage points to scan for Thompson's gazelles and impalas.

    ...

🌌 5. The Golden Hour & Farewell Campfire As the sun drops toward the horizon (05:30 PM), the lighting turns a brilliant golden color, offering the absolute best photography conditions of the trip. Capture iconic silhouettes of giraffes against the red African sunset. Return to camp by 06:30 PM for a final celebratory dinner, swapping contact information with your guide and listening to the distant roars of lions around the campfire.
